Project Engineer

The Role

  • Working under own initiative, with support from our close-knit projects team as necessary, fulfilling “inception to completion” project engineering and management.
  • A typical project engineer’s role starts with carrying out client liaison to fully identify detailed user requirement following receipt of order.
  • Continuing with engineering works including - sourcing equipment from our own range of products and that of close partner companies, working with the client to establish working line layout and agreeing KPI’s, generate P&ID’s & PFD’s, supplier negotiations and equipment purchasing, project cost tracking and monitoring, conduct our own internal fabrication quality and pre-assembly inspections and those with the client prior to despatch. Documentation gathering for manual compilation and training purposes.
  • Finishing with on-site works from start of installation to hand-over to client including – Site supervision of all elements of installation works, working closely with key contractors for both mechanical and electrical build. Hands-on approach to commissioning, engineer/operator training and managing closure of snagging lists.
  • On larger projects you may be nominated “project leader” whereby you would be leading a small team of Flo-Mech engineers plus health and safety manager on site working under CDM regulations.
  • The successful candidate can expect a healthy split of 60% office based activities and up-to 40% on-site. Site involvement varies from project to project but would typically involve 12 hour days 7 days/week; some projects involving 6 week install (single block), 1-2 weeks back in UK, 3 weeks commissioning.

  • Flo-Mech provides a complete range of products and services to a wide sector of the food processing industry, both in the UK, Republic of Ireland, and in other parts of the world. We have supplied systems and services as far a field as Japan and China, North and South America, South Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, and Australia.
  • All aspects of fruit and vegetable processing are catered for, whether it be "back-end" preparation, final processing equipment, electronic inspection systems or packaging equipment.
  • The canning industry is also a major market for us. We handle and fill products as diverse as pickles and baked beans, soups and pet foods, water and other beverages – into cans, glass jars/bottles and PET containers.
  • If there has to be one area of business however, in which Flo-Mech is perhaps more active than others, it is in the potato processing industry. The humble potato in one form or another has been at the centre of our activities for the past 28 years. Crisps (chips), French-fries, roast, mash (puree) and by-products are part of our day-to-day business.
  • Also potato and corn based snack lines are a specialty, whether they are fried or dried expanded products, we provide complete solutions.

The Department

  • Due to continued success and growth we are looking for an experienced engineer, preferably from the food sector, to join our successful operation to contribute to the quality of our service. Working with an established team of 6 other dynamic Project Engineers, dealing with “whole life cycle” project management & engineering within the food processing industry.
  • Flo-Mech projects are currently spread world-wide including UK, Continental Europe, Russia, South Africa, Asia & Middle-East, .
  • We follow a partnership travel security policy with our clients.

Candidate Attributes

  • Ideally a HNC/HND qualification in engineering
  • Ideally 3 years industry/field experience
  • Good understanding of machinery processes and design - logical mind
  • A good balance of pre-engineering experience and “hands-on” engineering aptitude
  • Dynamic, enthusiastic and flexible approach and willing to travel (at times on extended durations)
  • Excellent Commercial awareness
  • Excellent people skills and clear communicator with the ability to form strong customer relationships
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of the following:- Microsoft Project & Office range of programs
  • Ideally AutoCAD conversant to support generation of P&ID’s & Layout modification and drawing interpretation when on-site

Systems Compliance Manager

Systems Compliance Manager

The Systems Compliance Manager role provides:

engineering design, project management and project engineering support - in the field of functional safety compliance – to assist all internal teams in the design, planning delivery of our main business output which is project delivery of food processing systems to customers.

Reporting to the managing director, typical responsibilities and duties are as follows:

engineering design

support the company’s business activities in process line and plant machinery design & development in a variety of allied fields such as electrical, control and automation, plant floor to corporate it interfacing and functional safety including but not limited to design drawings, functional design specifications (FDS), risk assessments, hazop studies, safety requirement specifications (SRS), safety designs from first principles, system architecture and software design with associated documentation, and design drawing production and support.

project management

be actively involved with aspects of engineering projects including planning and management of supporting workloads and activities to align with overall project schedules.

project engineering

carry out engineering tasks required for the execution of the company’s business activities in process line and plant machinery as detailed above in the engineering design section. this would include;

  • writing and/or support the writing of functional design specifications
  • attending risk assessment and hazop study sessions
  • writing and/or support the writing of safety requirement specifications
  • attending meetings with subcontract suppliers for electrical and software (plc/scada/hmi) design
  • factory acceptance testing of control systems and associated systems
  • partake in functional safety reviews
  • validation of functional safety designs including performance level (e.g. sistema reports) and safety integrity level (sil, using calculations from the relevant standards)
  • electrical design reviews

technical support

provide technical support to sales and projects departments in the fields of engineering defined above, including;

  • technical input on quotations at sales stage
  • budget costings etc
  • aftersales support during installation
  • i/o checking and process line/machinery start-up support
  • systems and safety validation activities
  • software and site commissioning support
  • Ongoing support post-project including final snagging and process operational support on software and systems

functional safety

CMSE qualified to support business need, including SRS along with the ability to understand and cross reference to SDS/FSDS (safety design specification/functional safety design specification) documents, whether generated by Flo-Mech or others)

provide extensive and practical knowledge on all aspects of functional safety and associated standards including;

  • EN ISO 13849
  • IEC 61508/61511
  • EN 62061

to engineer projects requiring use of these reference standards, to support and mentor the project teams and act as subject matter expert in the field of functional safety including;

  • concept design
  • execution
  • validation using software tools or the standards
  • perform validation cals at a detailed technical level as required on a case by case basis

support to, as well as the execution of, the following Machinery Compliance/Safety tasks:

  • Support *main customer MESS duty holder.
    • Support production of *main customer MESS designer risk assessments (DRA’s) – both RAMS (mechanical) and RAPS (process).
    • Support coordination with *main customer global EHS team on MESS centreline process for Flo-range/partner equipment
    • Support production of safety requirement specifications (SRS), required for all projects
    • Support and review supply partner MESS related documentation
  • Advise on and support Flo-range/client new product development.
    • Support design review
    • HAZOP coordination/support
    • Support Safety review/document production
  • General support and input on all aspects of machinery design and layout
  • Support production of machinery risk assessments (DRA’s) for *other customer
  • Support for *other customer safety related documentation

essential skills:

  • qualification in associated technology field such as electrical/electronic engineering, control systems engineering, computer science etc
  • detailed working knowledge of functional safety in machinery or process control (ISO 13849, EN 62061, IEC 61508/61511)
  • formal functional safety accreditation such as FSeng, CMSE, TÜV etc

bonus skills:

  • advanced knowledge and field experience of control and automation and electrical/electronic engineering with detailed design abilities
  • control systems engineering background in plc/scada fields with programming abilities in RSLogix 5000, Studio 5000, Siemens STEP7/TIA Portal
